Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find out more about the Order

For more details about our Order, you can read THIS

Alternatively, fill in the online registration form at this LINK, and someone in a Chapter close to you will be in contact.

Am I eligible to join the Order of the Eastern Star?

If you are a woman who is at least 18 years of age, are of good moral character and have a belief in the existence of a Supreme Being you are eligible to join.

If you are male, you need to be a Master Mason.

Once I register online, when will I hear back?

Once you complete the online registration form, your interest will be sent to a Chapter near you who will contact you as soon as possible.  We strive to do this within 5 business days.

How do I know where my closest Chapter is?

Easy. To find the details for your closest chapter, please visit our National Directory where you can do a search.

You can also contact us via email.  Visit the Contact Us page for details.

What if I am interested but am not 100% sure? Can I change my mind?

By completing the online registration form you will be put in contact with a Chapter close to you and that Chapter will arrange to meet with you and answer any questions you may have.  Attending the Chapter social functions is a great way to meet the members and see if the Order (and that Chapter) is for you.

Only once you have met the members, asked all your questions and are ready to join, a more detailed application will be submitted to the Chapter you wish to join.

As much as we love getting new members, we will not push you to join and will respect your decision.

What if I do not know any current members who can support my application?

To be approved, all new membership applicants require a proposer and seconder. Don’t worry if you do not yet know anyone who can support your application. Complete the online registration form anyway and someone from your local chapter will be in touch shortly, they can assist you with your application.

Are there lots of rules and regulations?

As with any organisation, there is a Constitution and Laws that assist and guide the operation of Chapters.  All Chapters are also bound by the not-for-profit regulations and follow their State or Territory legislation in relation to the raising of funds for Charity.

What is the dress code?

The Order of the Eastern Star has a dress code.  At Chapter meetings, Sisters dress in white (i.e. Long white outfit, including loose-fitting ankle-length slacks with thigh-length tunic top, white or silver shoes and white accessories).  Brothers wear dinner suits. You must wear this dress at any Regular Chapter meeting.

As an alternative for Sisters, a shorter white dress may be substituted with a hem not more than twenty centimetres (20 cm) from the ankle; the dress should be modest, have sleeves and any skirt splits should be at the back and not above the knee

How often do Chapters meet?

There is one main General or Regular Chapter meeting each month. The Chapter is opened and closed according to ritual. This ritual is designed to remind all members of the purpose of the Order and the virtues all members aspire to follow. The rest of the meeting concentrates on business matters such as the minutes of previous meetings, correspondence, financial status etc. and then depending on the time of year, a service may be held to celebrate Christmas, Easter, Anzac Day or any other events.

In between the Regular meetings, various Committee meetings may be held to address Chapter business in more detail and to provide recommendations to the General meeting.

Each Chapter determines what day of the month their meetings will be held. Some Chapters meet in the evening and others meet during the day.

What does membership entitle one to?

Membership allows you to join an extraordinary community of likeminded people who are passionate about enriching the lives of others.

As a member, you can attend the monthly meetings held by your local Chapter and be part of their work to support the wider community.

How much does membership cost?

A one-time fee will be asked for when your membership application is accepted by a Chapter (about $35.00 AUD).  In addition, you will need to pay your annual dues to that Chapter.  Dues range from $30.00 to $100.00/year depending on that Chapter. Your annual dues are the only financial commitment you will have in any Chapter.

As we strive to enrich the lives of others and work for the betterment of the community, there are always fundraising activities taking place so please be prepared to join in and support each Chapter’s Charity drives.

How long does membership last?

Once you take an obligation to the Order at your first meeting, your membership never expires. Even if for some reason, you become non-financial in your Chapter, your Order of the Eastern Star membership stays with you forever.
